Podocarpus macrophyllus, commonly known as Japanese Yew, is an evergreen conifer native to southern Japan and parts of China. It belongs to the Podocarpaceae family and is characterized by its broad, lanceolate leaves measuring approximately 4 to 7 centimeters in length, which differ from the needle-like foliage typical of true yews (Taxus species). The species exhibits slow to moderate growth, often reaching heights between 10 to 20 meters under optimal conditions, with a dense, pyramidal growth habit that makes it suitable for both specimen planting and hedging.

Japanese Yew demonstrates high adaptability to various soil types, preferring well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5 to 7.0), and it tolerates urban pollution and salt spray, enhancing its utility in coastal and urban landscapes. Its shade tolerance surpasses many conifers, allowing it to thrive in partial to full shade environments, which broadens its applicability in diverse landscape
